Background of the Study
The mental health of elderly individuals is an increasingly important area of focus as the population ages, particularly in low-resource settings like Sokoto State. Depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline are common mental health conditions among the elderly and can significantly affect their quality of life (Aliyu et al., 2024). Factors such as social isolation, chronic illness, and loss of independence contribute to the mental health challenges faced by older adults. However, family support plays a crucial role in mitigating these challenges by providing emotional, social, and practical assistance, which has been shown to improve mental health outcomes for the elderly (Danjuma & Mohammed, 2023).
In Sokoto State, where many elderly individuals live in rural areas with limited access to formal healthcare services, family members often serve as the primary caregivers for older adults. Family support has been associated with improved mental health outcomes, as it helps reduce feelings of loneliness, enhances emotional well-being, and provides practical help in managing health conditions (Tukur & Salihu, 2023). However, despite the importance of family support, the specific impact of this support on the mental health of elderly patients in Sokoto State remains under-researched.
This study aims to investigate the impact of family support on the mental health of elderly patients in Sokoto State, exploring how different types of family support (emotional, practical, and financial) influence mental health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
The mental health of elderly individuals in Sokoto State is a growing concern, with high rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Family support has the potential to significantly improve mental health outcomes for elderly patients, yet the relationship between family support and mental health in this population is not well understood. This study seeks to examine how various forms of family support affect the mental health of elderly patients in Sokoto State, aiming to identify strategies for improving mental well-being in this vulnerable group.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of emotional, practical, and financial family support on the mental health of elderly patients in Sokoto State.
To assess the relationship between family support and the prevalence of mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety) among elderly patients in Sokoto State.
To explore the challenges faced by families in providing support to elderly patients and their impact on mental health outcomes.
Research Questions
How does emotional, practical, and financial family support impact the mental health of elderly patients in Sokoto State?
What is the relationship between family support and the prevalence of mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, among elderly patients in Sokoto State?
What challenges do families face in providing support to elderly patients, and how do these challenges affect mental health outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
Emotional, practical, and financial family support has a significant positive impact on the mental health of elderly patients in Sokoto State.
Elderly patients who receive greater family support are less likely to experience depression and anxiety.
Challenges such as financial constraints and lack of caregiving skills negatively impact the effectiveness of family support on the mental health of elderly patients in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on elderly patients aged 60 and above living in Sokoto State, examining the impact of family support on mental health outcomes. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with elderly patients and their family members. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported mental health outcomes and challenges in measuring the different types of family support accurately.
